Try Our Dragon Boat and Outrigger Canoe Programs
The Fraser Valley Paddling Club is always spreading the word about our programs and helping people just like yourself find their way onto a Dragon Boat or an Outrigger Canoe. Dragon Boat and Outrigger Canoe are two of the most rewarding team sports available today. A true team effort is needed to get the boat across the finish line. People of all ages, genders and fitness levels compete in our sports. If you would like to meet new people, learn a new sport or two and get into shape all at the same time, we can help.
So, what should you look forward to when you come out to paddle?
All participants will need to fill out some paper work (a waiver) before getting into one of our three dragon boats, so please show up a few minutes early. Your first time out you will receive some on land instruction from our coaches. This on land instruction will consist of stroke techniques (how to hold the paddle, the length of our stroke, etc..) and a vocabulary lesson (catch phrases used on a Dragon Boat and Outrigger) and then off to the boats we go. The practice will last between 45 to 60 minutes. Do not get excited or discouraged, the team will not be paddling all that time. There are rest breaks in between. Please note, new paddlers are not expected to paddle the whole practice. We understand that everyone has different levels of fitness and we cater our practices to meet everyone’s needs. The team will gradually build up strength and stamina over the course of the season. Once the practice is over, we will get you back on land and give you the opportunity to talk with our members and coaches. We will do our best to answer any questions you may have.
What about clothing and equipment?
Please remember that Dragon Boating and Outrigger Canoeing are water sports and you may get wet. Please dress according to the weather. We recommend layers if it is a little on the cool side. Quick dry clothing is recommended. Do not wear denim please. Neoprene gloves are also recommended. The Fraser Valley Dragon Boat Club will supply PDF’s and paddles.
If you would like more information on either of our programs please email info@fvpc.ca
We look forward to seeing you on the water with us this year. Paddles Up.
